BERNARD S. COHEN, ESQUIRE
Attorney:
Mr. Cohen has litigated cases involving breach of contract, anti trust,
securities fraud, personal injury, civil rights, criminal law, environmental
law, family law, constitutional law, professional malpractice, commercial
law and consumer protection. He was formeraly certified as a Civil Trial
Advocate by the National Board of Trial Advocacy. He is presently senior
counsel to the law firm of Dunn, Curcio & Keating, P.C., Alexandria,
Virginia. The firm engages in a general trial practice.
Legislator:
Member of Virginia House of Delegates, 1980-1995. Committee member: Courts
of Justice; Corporations, Insurance and Banking; Labor and Commerce; Chief
Patron of legislation to allow death with dignity for the terminally ill;
protect tenants in units convened to condominiums; ensure rights of condominium
owners to assert claims regarding commonly held property; grant child
visitation rights to grandparents, stepparents, and other family members;
establish a motorcycle rider safety training fund; and to provide for
long-term care insurance.
Mr. Cohen was appointed by the Speaker of the House
and served as a member of the Virginia Code Commission until 2000.
Government Service:
From 1956 to 1961, Mr. Cohen was employed as a Labor Economist and Labor
Law Advisor at the U.S. Department of Labor.
Teaching and Speaking:
At George Washington University, he taught Environmental Litigation for
five years. He was a member of the faculty at the National College of
Advocacy at the Harvard Law School, August 1973. Mr. Cohen has addressed
the Alabama State Bar, the Texas State Bar, the Young Presidents Organization,
the Practicing Law Institute, the Association of Trial Lawyers of America,
the Virginia Trial Lawyers Association, and numerous civic and professional
groups.
Landmark Litigation:
Counsel to Mr. And Mrs. Richard Loving in the Supreme Court decision of
Loving vs. Virginia, 388 US 1(1967), which resulted in declaring unconstitutional
the anti-miscegenation statutes of nineteen states.
Noteworthy Litigation:
Counsel to several environmental groups in a lawsuit against a developer
which prevented the landfill of thirty-six acres of the Potomac River
at Hunting Creek estuary.
Counsel to Virginians for Dulles in a suit against the
F.A.A. and major airlines to abate jet Hoise at Washington National Airport.
